UK Campaigners back MPs' calls to save Saharawi Gandhi
On Saturday, campaigners protested outside the Moroccan Embassy, calling for the Moroccan authorities to allow the Saharawi human rights activist, Aminatou Haidar, to return home. Join the next protest at the gates of Downing Street on Thursday 10 December at 12pm
UK Campaigners demonstrated this weekend outside the Moroccan embassy in London calling for the Moroccan Government to immediately allow human rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize nominee Aminatou Haidar known as the ‘Saharawi Gandhi’ to return home.
On Tuesday, MPs tabled an Early Day Motion in the House of Commons expressing dismay at Ms Haidar´s expulsion whilst other MPs signed a letter expressing their support for Ms Haidar.
Mother of 2, Aminatou Haidar is from Western Sahara a country occupied by Morocco since1975. Expelled 3 weeks ago from her home after writing Western Sahara rather than Morocco on her landing card has today entered to 20th day of her hunger strike at Lanzarote airport with around 60 supporters from all over the world. She is incredibly weak and there are fears she will die shortly.
In a cruel twist on Friday night, a plane due to carry Ms Haidar back home, failed to take off from Lanzarote airport after the Moroccan government refused to give it permission to land.
Her deportation has been condemned by human rights organisations including Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International who issued an urgent action for people to call on the Moroccan authorities to allow her home.
Supporters calling for her return include actors Javier Bardem and Terry Jones, film directors Pedro Almodovar and Ken Loach, musicians Manu Chao and Brian Eno and Nobel Literature Laureate, Jose Salamango.
One activist outside the Embassy said: The extent of human rights abuses in Western Sahara has been hidden for too long. If they allow Aminatou to die the Moroccans will prove to the world what really goes on in Western Sahara.
Take direct action – join us at 12pm on Thursday 10th December outside the gates of Downing Street (off Whitehall) to demonstrate and show the Moroccan authorities that they must act.
